Dr. Bobbie Hansel Union

Dr. Hansel-Union, Ph.D., LPN, PBSF | CEO
Dr. Hansel-Union earned a Doctorates of Health Administration from Kennedy-Western University. She received her Master’s of Public Administration from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and her Bachelor’s of Business Administration from Radford University. She also was admitted to Virginia State Board of Nursing in 1976. She has dedicated her life to helping children, the elderly and individuals with disabilities. With years of experience in the health care industry, Dr. Hansel-Union has a long history of advocating to the VA General Assembly for increased health awareness and resources. Board involvement and Community volunteerism include:

• Member – Virginia Network of Private Providers

Dr. Hansel-Union is the CEO of Hansel Union Consulting, PLLC and she currently works with individuals with disabilities in residential, day support and community programs in the Hampton Roads area. She lives in Portsmouth, VA, with her husband, Douglas B. Union. She also has three wonderful adult children and two grandsons. Dr. Hansel Union experienced a neurological disorder at the age of 38 in which she experienced left–sided weakness and aphasia. It was through rehabilitative therapy that Dr. Hansel-Union was able to have a complete recovery.

Walter Linney, MA, CI | Senior Vice President of Business Development

Walter has worked in behavior health and intellectual and developmental disability (IDD) service oversight and operations for over 20 years. He is passionate about advocacy, system navigation, health communication, and improving access to care.

Walter’s career has been spent working in Medicaid Managed Care, with leadership roles in care management, provider networks, and quality management. During this time, Walter has overseen the expansion of IDD home and community-based service lines for national and regional healthcare providers, helped to introduce Remote Supports to payors and providers in NC, and facilitated the implementation of sweeping systems changes to support Medicaid Transformation.

Kristine Pierce, MBA, MS, SHRM-SCP,  Head of Human Resources

Dynamic and results-driven Human Resources executive with more than 20 years of progressive leadership experience in healthcare and military organizations. Proven expertise in developing and executing strategic HR initiatives across multi-site operations, including talent acquisition, employee relations, organizational development, compensation and benefits, performance management, HRIS implementation, compliance, and workforce engagement. Recognized for building high-performing teams, reducing turnover, improving employee retention, leading organizational transformation, and aligning human capital strategies with business objectives. SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) with an MBA in Human Resource Management, an M.S. in Organizational Leadership, and a Doctor of Business Administration currently in progress.

Diane Gressett, MS, CTRS | Recreation Lead

Diane Gressett has a Master’s in Therapeutic Recreation from Virginia Commonwealth University. She has over 30-years‘ experience in the field working with both children and adults with physical and mental disabilities.  

Dr. Karen Van Daniker PT, DPT | Occupational/Physical Lead

Karen graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Psychology. Karen moved back up north and graduated from Sacred Heart University in Connecticut with a Doctorate in Physical Therapy. Karen always knew she wanted to do something hands-on to help people. Karen has worked mainly with the older adult population and is passionate about making what once seemed impossible possible. In my spare time, she likes to play tennis and spend time with my family and two golden retrievers.

Diana Levering, MA, PBSF | Marketing Coordinator/Behavioral Therapist  

Diana graduated with a Bachelor’s in Psychology from St. Leo University, a Master’s in Human Services Counseling from Liberty University, and received her Positive Behavioral Support Facilitator endorsement from VCU. Diana has worked with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities for over 10 years. She has a strong passion for ensuring that individuals with disabilities are treated with dignity and respect and have the supports they need to live the life they choose to have. In her downtime, Diana enjoys spending time with her family and friends, likes to travel, and finds peace in nature.

Joy Davis, MS, CCC-SLP/ Speech Lead

Joy Davis is a certified speech-language pathologist who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Cedarville University and a master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology from Old Dominion University. Joy comes to Hansel Union with experience assessing and treating various communication disorders in the outpatient pediatric setting and public-school setting. Joy’s passion is to provide individuals with communication disorders with interventions that are established in evidence-based practice. She especially enjoys working with individuals with autism spectrum disorder, stuttering disorders, and reading disorders. She finds joy in partnering with individuals and families to discover the means of intervention that will best meet the needs of individuals with disabilities so that they can reach their full potential and be as successful as possible in achieving their goals. In her downtime, Joy enjoys spending time with her family, relaxing at the beach, and hunting for treasures at second-hand stores. 

Mel Barlow , CTRS, PBSF | Behavior Lead/Recreational Therapis

Mel Barlow is a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist, who graduated from Old Dominion University in 2009. He worked in mental health for eight years, with patients of all ages and diagnoses. He has spent the last four years working with the geriatric population in assisted living and long-term care. Throughout his career he has really enjoyed working in the field of recreation therapy, and learning as much as he can from each opportunity. In his spare time, Mel loves going to the beach, concerts, exercising, and spending time with family and friends.  

Paige Shabro RN, BSN, MSN

Paige Shabro is a Registered Nurse and has been in the nursing field since 2009. She completed her Bachelor’s in the Science of Nursing from Virginia Commonwealth University, and she received her Master’s in the Science of Nursing from Frontier Nursing University. She has a passion for mental health and women’s health. She provides nursing consults to the clients of Hansel Union Consulting. These consults provide information for various medical conditions and medication therapy reviews. Paige lives in Chesapeake with her husband and two sons, Gabe and Declan. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her family, reading, and traveling.  

Teresa Haner, Office Manager

Teresa has more than 15 years’ experience as an admin assistant. She is a Minnesota native but has called Virginia home for over 20 years now. When not working, she enjoys spending time with family and friends.

Kylie Wilcox, Administrative Assistant

Kylie is originally from Idaho but moved to Virginia in 2022 to be closer to her sister and nephews. She is currently attending ODU for Business Management, Majoring in Human Resources. Kylie enjoys being able to work somewhere that makes a difference in the lives of others. When she’s not working or studying, she enjoys spending time with her daughter and exploring the Hampton Roads area.

Christine Lohoski-Taylor, Administrative Assistant  

Christine has been in the Hampton Roads area for 17 years.  When she is not working Christine enjoys spending time with her husband and son, family and friends, traveling, going to concerts, watching her son play hockey, and trying new restaurants.  Christine enjoys working for a company that makes a positive difference in the lives of others.    

Torry Lynch, Billing Manager  

Torry is originally from San Diego, California, but has been living in Virginia since 2015. She spent 8 years living in Japan, where she had the privilege of teaching English to people of all ages. She loves singing, dancing, working out, reading, going to the beach, learning Spanish, and practicing yoga. Raised by a single mother, Torry is the oldest of 3 girls. Her mom and sisters also live in Virginia, and they love spending time together. She lives with her husband in the Railroad District of Norfolk, and they enjoy listening to music, trying new restaurants, and watching The Office. Torry is passionate about helping people and is proud to work with a company that serves the community in such an impactful and important way.  

Alexandra Bryan, Billing and Administrative Assistant

Alexandra Bryan brings over 20 years of customer service experience, with a strong background in Quality Assurance, administrative management, and invoice and billing management. She is known for her attention to detail and her ability to support teams through efficient, well-organized processes. Outside of work, Alexandra enjoys the outdoors, traveling, and spending quality time with family and friends.

Madam Spooky le Fur, Director of Morale

Madam Spooky diligently supports the morale and welfare of all HUCO staff and visitors. From gentle chirrups for treats to sprawling cuddles for belly brushes, she demands the attention of all she deems needing it. She can be found lounging in a sunny spot or napping in her favorite nooks and crannies, waiting for the chance to boost the joy of our dedicated staff.

Sir Truman Newman, Assistant Director of Morale

Sir Truman takes a more laid-back approach to boosting morale at HUCO, knowing that his presence alone is enough to bring a smile. As Madam Spooky’s right-hand man, he often seeks her guidance on approaching his HUCO duties, but if you’re lucky enough to be chosen as a recipient of his purrs and head-butts, it’s an inspiring experience. Truman enjoys tuna treats and gentle brushing when his shy nature allows it.

Aditi Kale PT, MPT   

Aditi is a licensed physical therapist and earned a Master of Physical Therapy from The College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, MN in 2001. Since then, she has worked in outpatient orthopedic clinics with adults and teens and the older adult population in assisted and independent living communities, and private homes. Aditi has extensive experience working with older adults and especially individuals with dementia and other neurologic impairments. She is passionate about helping clients realize their full potential and especially loves working with them in their own homes. In her free time, Aditi enjoys traveling, reading and spending time with her husband, teens and dog.

Dr. Ashton Pyle PT, DPT  

Ashton is a licensed and board-certified Physical Therapist. She graduated from Old Dominion University with a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science and a minor in Health and Wellness in 2018, and a Doctorate in Physical Therapy in 2021. Ashton comes to Hansel-Union with experience working primarily with older adults in assisted living facilities, skilled nursing, and within the home. Ashton finds fulfillment in her work through the relationships she builds with her clients, celebrating their wins, and working through problems to find solutions. Outside of work, Ashton enjoys spending time with her family, playing with her two German Shepards, indoor cycling, and traveling.  

Dr. Dana S. Reesman, PT, DPT

Dana graduated from Virginia Tech with a Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry and from Old Dominion University with a Doctorate in Physical Therapy. Dana spent a decade working in pediatric and adolescent sports medicine with the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters. Dana has also worked in adult outpatient and home health settings. Dana loves establishing a therapeutic rapport with her patients and supporting them in meeting their rehab goals. Dana has a special interest in biomechanics and in analyzing and improving how people move. Outside of work, Dana loves spending time with her family, camping, running, and training for races from 5k to ultramarathon distances.

Dr. Kayla Hamilton PT, DPT

Kayla Hamilton is a Doctor of Physical Therapy, Board Certified Neurological Clinical Specialist, and Certified Lymphedema Therapist. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science from North Dakota State University in 2010 and a Doctorate in Physical Therapy from The University of Michigan-Flint in 2014. In her years of clinical experience, she has worked in various settings and has found most enjoyment working with individuals with neurological diagnoses while specializing in spinal cord injury rehabilitation, custom wheelchair evaluations, and prosthetic training. Kayla has also enjoyed mentoring physical therapy students as a clinical and laboratory instructor in addition to consulting on continuing education courses outside of the clinic. She is passionate about using her expertise in empowering her clients to maintain their independence and thrive in what is most important to them. Outside of work, Kayla enjoys weightlifting, baking and cooking, and spending time with her husband, son, and two dogs.

Becky Rushing, OTR/L

Becky is a licensed and board-certified occupational therapist. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in sociology from Towson University and graduated with her Master’s of Science in Occupational Therapy from Virginia Commonwealth University. She has worked in a variety of settings including skilled nursing facilities, assisted and independent living communities, and private homes. Becky has extensive experience working with older adults and individuals with dementia. She also has a special interest in collaborating with families on home modifications so that individuals of all ages and abilities can safely age in place. In her free time, Becky enjoys spending time with her family, kayaking, visiting local wineries, and gardening.

Dr. Brooke Henline OTD, OTR/L

Dr. Brooke is a licensed and board-certified Occupational Therapist who received her Bachelor’s of Science in Exercise Science at Old Dominion University in 2017. She then went on to obtain her Doctor of Occupational Therapy degree at Mary Baldwin University in 2021. She has a passion for working with the adult population, especially with many neurological and Dementia diagnoses. She had the opportunity to develop a Return-to-Work Employment program within the United Spinal Association where she facilitated group employment sessions and created a video library with tips and tricks for returning to work for individuals with a spinal cord injury. In Dr. Brooke’s free time, she loves spending her mornings at a cute coffee shop, going on long walks/runs, traveling as much as possible, and spending a significant amount of time at the beach with a good book and her husband and little corgi, Pawl.

Caroline Luther MOT, OTR/L  

Caroline is a licensed and board-certified occupational therapist with a foundation in both clinical practice and holistic care. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Health and Behavioral Studies from James Madison University in 2019, with minors in pre-occupational therapy and special education. In 2021, she completed her Master of Occupational Therapy at Messiah University. Caroline’s clinical experience includes outpatient pediatrics, where she specialized in sensory processing and integration. In 2023, she expanded her expertise by becoming a Certified Lactation Counselor through the Academy of Lactation Policy and Practice (ALPP). Passionate about supporting individuals, families, and caregivers, Caroline takes a holistic approach to occupational therapy, aiming to promote independence and enhance quality of life. Originally from Virginia Beach, she has made Harrisonburg, VA, her permanent home since completing graduate school. In her free time, Caroline enjoys hiking, traveling, cooking, and spending quality time with her husband and their one-year-old son.  

Heather Britt, MS, OTR/L

Heather is a licensed and board-certified occupational therapist. She earned her Master of Science in Occupational Therapy from Utica College in Utica, New York, in 2017, and her Bachelor of Health Sciences from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, in 2012. Heather comes to Hansel-Union with experience assessing and treating various neurological and orthopedic injuries and conditions in outpatient and skilled nursing settings. As an OT, Heather has specialized in custom orthoses for the upper extremity secondary to injury, post-operative recovery, and to prevent contractures; evaluating and assessing clients for wheelchairs/power mobility; and developing functional maintenance programs in a retirement community to promote aging in place. Heather strives to provide client-centered care focusing on skills that are important and meaningful to the client to achieve and maintain independence in their daily lives. Heather enjoys spending time with her husband, two children, and her German Shepherd. Her hobbies include running, traveling, spending time with family, listening to music, and being outdoors.

Kasey Hester, MOT, OTR/L

Kasey is a licensed and board-certified occupational therapist. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Tennessee in 2000 and her Master’s of Occupational Therapy from the University of St. Augustine in 2002. Kasey has worked in various settings, including school-based (brick-and-mortar and virtual), early intervention, and outpatient clinics. She has extensive experience in parent coaching, sensory integration disorders, and visual deficits. Kasey loves helping people of all ages and backgrounds utilize strategies and tools to live as independently as possible. Outside of work, Kasey enjoys seeing live music, going to the beach, cooking vegetarian meals, and relaxing with her family.  

Laura Heaton, MSOT, OTR/L

Laura is a licensed and board-certified occupational therapist. She earned her Master of Science in Occupational Therapy from Jefferson College of Health Sciences in Roanoke, Virginia. Laura earned her Bachelor of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders in Athens, Ohio. She comes to Hansel-Union with experience with pediatric and geriatric populations. Outside of work, Laura enjoys spending time with her husband and dogs, traveling, visiting friends and spending time with family.  

Lauren McIntyre, OTR/L

Lauren is a licensed and board-certified occupational therapist who completed her undergraduate and graduate work at Radford University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Psychology in 2019 and a Master of Occupational Therapy in 2021. Lauren comes to Hansel-Union with experience working with the older adult population in the skilled nursing setting. She is excited to collaborate with clients and their support systems to identify specific needs in order to provide individualized ideas to improve overall quality of life. She has a passion for helping people and aims to be a lifelong learner. Lauren loves navigating life with her husband and puppy by her side. She enjoys spending time with her family, catching up with friends, soaking up the sunshine, and taking a good nap.

Mary Reichle, MOT, OTR/L  

Mary graduated from West Chester University with a Bachelor’s of Science in 2014. She then earned her Master’s in Occupational Therapy from University of the Sciences in Philadelphia PA. Mary has been a Board Certified and Licensed Occupational Therapist since 2018. She has worked with a variety of diagnoses across the lifespan in community settings including client’s homes as well as independent and assisted living facilities. Mary has a passion for advocating, educating, and empowering the clients she works with in order to improve their independence and quality of life. She has a special interest in durable medical equipment, adaptive equipment, and assistive technology. Outside of work, Mary enjoys exercising, traveling, and spending quality time with her husband and their dog Toby as well as friends and family.  

Diane Gressett, MS, CTRS | Recreation Lead

Diane Gressett has a Master’s in Therapeutic Recreation from Virginia Commonwealth University. She has over 30-years‘ experience in the field working with both children and adults with physical and mental disabilities.  

Ayesha Amin, CTRS

Ayesha is a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist, who graduated from Old Dominion University in 2016. She has two years of experience working with children and adolescents with behavioral and mental disabilities and five years of experience working with the geriatric population. She has a passion for helping her clients achieve their goals. She is excited to expand her knowledge in the therapeutic recreation field. Her hobbies are traveling, listening to music, and spending time with family.

Ciara Adams, CTRS

Ciara graduated from Old Dominion University in 2016 as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist. She has six years of experience working with children in the behavioral and mental health field. She is passionate about Recreation Therapy and the importance of leisure activities in everyday life.

Cindy Halonski, CTRS

Cindy Halonski is a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist, who graduated from Longwood College in 1984. She worked with adolescents and adults in a psychiatric setting for 21 years. She then worked at a skilled nursing facility for 14 years with residents who had physical and mental disabilities including Traumatic Brain Injury. She loves to see individuals with disabilities accomplish their goals and have fun! She has been married since 1986 and they have an amazing son who lives in Richmond, Virginia. She lives in Virginia Beach with her husband and four cats. She enjoys spending time with family and friends.  

Kywana Corbett, LRT, CTRS

Kywana Corbett is a passionate licensed Recreation Therapist in North Carolina with a mission to empower individuals to reach their fullest potential through meaningful and therapeutic activities. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Recreation Therapy from Winston-Salem State University and has experience working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (ID/DD) and traumatic brain injuries (TBI). Kywana specializes in creating person-centered recreation therapy programs that foster growth across physical, cognitive, emotional, and social domains promoting overall well-being, independence, and community inclusion. Outside of her professional work, Kywana enjoys traveling internationally and spending quality time with her family.

Nicole Cowen, CTRSL

Nicole is a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist who graduated with her Bachelor of Science from Old Dominion University in 2015. Nicole has experience working in inpatient rehabilitation, substance abuse rehabilitation, long-term care, corrections, and with adults and adolescents in mental and behavioral health settings. Nicole has a passion for helping others and is always eager to learn and grow her knowledge of recreational therapy. In her free time, Nicole enjoys reading, photography, being outdoors, and spending time with her family.

Jasmine Holloman, CTRS

Jasmine graduated from Winston-Salem State University in 2019 and is a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist. She is currently pursuing her Master’s Degree at Arizona State University for Special Education with a concentration in Applied Behavior Analysis. When time permits, Jasmine also performs work as a Registered Behavior Technician in which she has had the opportunity to work one on one with a number of youths with challenging diagnosis. She has a true passion for working with individuals with special needs and thoroughly enjoys helping each of her client’s progress in all areas of development to reach their individual goals. In her spare time, Jasmine enjoys spending time with her family, engaging in sport activities, creating DIY projects and listening to music.  

Samantha Keyes, CTRS, PBSF  

Samantha is a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist, who graduated from Old Dominion University in 2015. She has 10 years of experience working with the elderly community and four years of experience working with children with behavioral and mental disabilities. She is excited to expand her experience and knowledge in the therapeutic recreation field. She enjoys outdoor activities, adventure, and spending time with family

Jarrod Vaughan, MS, BCBA/LBA

Jarrod received a Bachelor’s in Psychology with an emphasis in behavior analysis from the University of Central Missouri in 2016 and a Master’s in Behavior Analysis and Therapy in 2018, also from the University of Central Missouri. He has worked with children, adolescents, and adults with a range of disabilities in several different settings. He especially enjoys behavioral medicine, behavioral neuroscience, and social skills training. In his downtime, he likes to play board and video games, read, and spend time with his wife and fur babies.

Jen Hokaj, M.Ed, BCBA/LBA

Jen Hokaj has practiced as a licensed Board Certified Behavior Analyst since 2016 and has been working with individuals aged between 18 months and 20 years old with various disabilities since 2011. She attended James Madison University and George Mason University, earning her bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Her passions in Applied Behavior Analysis include: reducing severe problem behaviors, teaching functional replacement behaviors, and teaching functional communication skills using speech and/or voice output communication devices. She has worked with individuals from diverse backgrounds providing and overseeing 1:1 intensive ABA therapy in-home and clinic settings. Jen also worked collaboratively with top professionals to design a model for delivering remote BACB supervision and mentorship services to providers seeking BCBA/BCaBA certification internationally and subsequently provided those services. Outside work, Jen enjoys spending time with her two daughters, husband, and dog (Walter). Jen and her husband Rafael also actively participate in the brewing community in Hampton Roads and own and run American Homebrew Supply in the JANAF shopping center in Norfolk, Virginia.

Kavesha Reid, MS, BCBA/LBA

Kavesha is a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst and LBA living on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Kavesha received her Master of Science in Psychology from Grand Canyon University in 2021 and completed an Applied Behavior Analysis graduate certificate from George Mason University in 2022. Before becoming a BCBA, Kavesha was a Support Coordinator for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Kavesha is passionate about making a difference in the lives of others. In her downtime, Kavesha enjoys traveling and spending time with her husband and two children.

Melissa Union, M.Ed, BCBA/LBA

Melissa Union is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst who graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a Master’s in Early Childhood Special Education in 2005. Melissa worked in Orlando, Florida as a Tittle One self-contained special education teacher for seven years before attending the Florida Institute of Technology to complete a Master’s add-on certificate in Behavior Analysis. Melissa has a wide range of experience from birth to adulthood with developmental disabilities, specific learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, and related behavior disorders. Melissa worked as a direct ABA provider before joining the Hansel Union team as a behavior consultant. Samantha Keyes, CTRS, PBSF  

Samantha is a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist, who graduated from Old Dominion University in 2015. She has 10 years of experience working with the elderly community and four years of experience working with children with behavioral and mental disabilities. She is excited to expand her experience and knowledge in the therapeutic recreation field. She enjoys outdoor activities, adventure, and spending time with family

Tommy Parry, LMHC, LBA/BCBA

Tommy is a dual-licensed mental health counselor and behavior analyst with over 15 years of clinical experience working with a wide range of populations. Tommy received his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Master’s in Special Education from George Mason University, where he also completed the Applied Behavior Analysis coursework to become a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst. Tommy completed a Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Old Dominion University. He has been working with individuals and families impacted by autism and related disorders since 2008 and has been board-certified since 2011. Tommy has expertise in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and is regularly engaged in continuing education, public speaking, staff training, and research connected to helping people improve their psychological flexibility and live meaningful, connected, and vital lives. He enjoys spending time with his family, playing musical instruments, and going to concerts in his spare time.

Samantha Dove, M.Ed, BCBA/LBA

Samantha Dove is a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst and LBA living in Mead, Co. She has over 15 years of experience working with children and adults in many settings. She has been working in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis for five years, but before that worked as a Special Education teacher in Virginia Beach Public Schools. She is passionate about advocating and helping individuals with disabilities accomplish their goals. She loves to go camping, paddleboarding, and spending time with her family.

Tessa Flahive-Foro, M.A. BCBA, LBA

Tessa Flahive-Foro is a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), and Licensed Behavior Analyst (LBA) based in Colorado Springs, CO. With 14 years of experience supporting individuals with disabilities in various settings, Tessa began her career as a Special Education Teacher before transitioning into behavior analysis. She has worked with clients of all ages and a wide range of disabilities. Tessa is passionate about leveraging her teaching background to empower and educate caregivers, helping them effectively support others while feeling confident and calm in their roles. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling, camping, hiking, and playing soccer.  

Dr. Angelica Cream-Wright, PsyD, LP, HSP-P

Dr. Angelica is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist who obtained her undergraduate degree from Spelman College in Atlanta, GA, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. She also received her doctoral degree from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology in Washington, DC, receiving a Doctor of Psychology in Clinical Psychology. From the very beginning of her career, Dr. Angelica has been driven by a passion for understanding each individual’s unique story and helping them find the answers they need to thrive. Her clinical journey began deeply rooted in community advocacy, conducting Social Security and disability evaluations. This foundational experience taught her the critical importance of clear, comprehensive diagnostic clarity and gave her a profound appreciation for how the right documentation and support can genuinely transform a person’s life.

Over the years, Dr. Angelica’s work has expanded to touch the lives of individuals across the entire lifespan. She is honored to work closely with children, adolescents, adults, and veterans, tailoring her approach to meet the specific developmental and life stages of each person she serves.

Today, her work focuses heavily on providing psychological and neuropsychological evaluations for individuals navigating a wide range of needs. Whether she is working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, supporting neurodivergent populations, or helping clients untangle complex symptoms to achieve general diagnostic clarity, her goal remains the same: to provide a warm, collaborative, and validating experience. Dr. Angelica believes that an evaluation isn’t just a set of tests; it is a roadmap designed to empower individuals, families, and care teams with the insights needed to move forward with confidence.

Joy Davis, MS, CCC-SLP – Lead

Joy Davis is a certified speech-language pathologist who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Cedarville University and a master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology from Old Dominion University. Joy comes to Hansel Union with experience assessing and treating various communication disorders in the outpatient pediatric setting and public-school setting. Joy’s passion is to provide individuals with communication disorders with interventions that are established in evidence-based practice. She especially enjoys working with individuals with autism spectrum disorder, stuttering disorders, and reading disorders. She finds joy in partnering with individuals and families to discover the means of intervention that will best meet the needs of individuals with disabilities so that they can reach their full potential and be as successful as possible in achieving their goals. In her downtime, Joy enjoys spending time with her family, relaxing at the beach, and hunting for treasures at second-hand stores. 

Emily Hunley, M.S., CCC-SLP

Emily is a certified speech-language pathologist with a Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology from Old Dominion University. She has over 11 years of experience in assessing and treating various communication disorders in the public-school setting. She has a passion for empowering clients and their caregivers and strives to find the best interventions to increase communication and reduce frustration. In her downtime, Emily enjoys thrifting, decorating, and spending time with her husband, twin boys, and her dog, Etta.  

Emily Sharp, M.S., CCC-SLP  

Emily is a certified speech-language pathologist who graduated with her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Speech-Language Pathology from Old Dominion University. Emily has experience working with children and adults in outpatient and residential care settings. Emily is certified by DIR Floortime, PROMPT+, and SOS Feeding. Emily is interested in Augmentative and Alternative Communication, Speech Sound Disorders, Social Communication, and Feeding/Swallowing. When she’s not working, Emily enjoys going on adventures with her husband and dogs.  

Gabriela Jatene, MA, CCC-SLP

Gabriela is a certified Speech-Language Pathologist who received her Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Pace University in 2013 and a Master’s Degree in Speech-Language Pathology from Long Island University in 2016. Gabriela has experience providing skilled services to school-age students and the adult population in the outpatient rehabilitation setting. She is passionate about getting to know each client and supporting them in achieving their functional goals to enhance communication and overall quality of life. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her husband, two daughters, and their pug. Together, they love exploring new parks and restaurants in their community. At home, she finds joy in decorating and creating cozy, inviting spaces for her family.

Jacqueline Rurak, MS, CCC-SLP

Jackie is a certified Speech-Language Pathologist who completed her undergraduate and graduate work at The College of Saint Rose in Albany, NY, earning a Master’s Degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders in 2008.   After college she found herself in Virginia Beach and has been living there ever since. Jackie has 17 years of experience in assessing and treating  various communication disorders in public and private school settings and outpatient settings (with both children and adults).    Jackie has a passion for helping people and supporting their communication needs to ensure the best quality of life.  In her spare time, you can find her at the baseball or flag football fields cheering on her 3 boys and spending time with family and friends.  

Joyce Downs, MS. CCC-SLP

Joyce is a nationally certified and state-licensed Speech Language Pathologist who has been in the field for over 20 years. Joyce’s experience includes working with all ages in public schools, private practice, and rehabilitation hospitals. The heart of her motivation as an SLP is putting her clients and families first, working hard to decrease frustration and increase communication. She has a special interest in Augmentative and Alternative Communication as she believes everyone has a fundamental right to communicate and to connect with others. Outside of work, she enjoys relaxing with family and friends, reading books, trying new art and craft activities, and spoiling her 2 cats and 2 dogs.

Karen Emrich, MS, CCC-SLP

Karen graduated with her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Speech-Language Pathology from The Pennsylvania State University. Karen has extensive speech-language and management experience with the adult/geriatric population across a range of settings, including skilled nursing facilities, assisted living facilities, retirement communities, and outpatient rehab departments. Karen always had a passion for working with clients who have autism or intellectual disabilities, clients requiring augmentative communication, and the dysphagic population. She looks forward to working directly with her clients to make ta difference in their lives.

Outside of work, Karen enjoys spending time with her daughter and son-in-law, family, and friends. Karen loves reading and traveling, with her favorite spot being Southern California/Laguna Beach/Newport Beach. Karen is also known for having a passion for statement necklaces and loves shopping in boutiques.

Laura Hammond, MS, CCC-SLP

Laura Hammond is a certified Speech-Language Pathologist who earned her Master’s Degree from LaSalle University in 2009. Since then, she has devoted her career to working with the geriatric population across a range of settings, including skilled nursing facilities, acute care, assisted living, and home health.  

She has a special interest in the evaluation and treatment of swallowing disorders, with a focus on helping individuals manage dysphagia while preserving the joy, dignity, and social connection of shared meals.  

Laura is enthusiastic about the opportunities that therapeutic consultation offers and is passionate about empowering her clients to express themselves in all the ways they are able.  

Outside of her professional life, Laura treasures time with her young son. Together, they explore the outdoors—lakes, oceans, rivers, creeks, gardens, and forests are favorite weekend destinations. Visits with friends and family round out their chaotically happy social calendar.  

Lisa Iman, M.S., CCC-SLP

Lisa is a certified speech-language pathologist with a Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology from Old Dominion University. She has over 13 years of experience with both pediatric and adult populations in a variety of settings. She is passionate about working to support clients in developing meaningful communication skills that improve their confidence, independence, and quality of life. Lisa is interested in Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), Executive Function, Feeding/Swallowing . and improving Social Language skills. In her downtime, Lisa enjoys being outside as much as possible, walking in the park, relaxing at the beach, reading, drawing, and spending time with her daughter and two dogs.

Melissa is a licensed and board-certified occupational therapist. She earned her Master of Science in Occupational Therapy from Clarkson University in New York, in 2020. Melissa earned her Bachelor of Science in Rehabilitation and Human Services and a Special Education Minor at Penn State University in Pennsylvania, in 2018. She comes to Hansel-Union with experience with pediatrics in early intervention and adult inpatient neurological conditions. Melissa has extensive experience with sensory integration/processing, feeding skills, and caregiver education/coaching. Outside of work, Melissa enjoys spending time with her daughter, traveling, visiting friends, and exploring new places.

Nicole Askew, MA, CCC-SLP

Nicole is a certified Speech-Language Pathologist who received her Bachelor’s Degree in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology with a minor in Special Education from Old Dominion University in 2008 and a Master’s Degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Hampton University in 2011. Nicole has 12 years of experience providing skilled services to geriatric clients with various diagnoses in skilled nursing, acute care, inpatient rehabilitation, and home health settings. She has a special interest in working with clients who are neurodiverse and exhibit dysphagia and/or aphasia as a result. She is excited to use the knowledge she gained from her previous experiences and apply it to the therapeutic consultative setting. Outside of work, Nicole enjoys spending time with her husband and three daughters, going to her parent’s beach cottage in the OBX, going to the beach, shopping for a bargain, watching her daughters play softball, coaching cheerleading, and making memories with her family and friends.
